New Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States Version 8.0
The National Technical Committee for Hydric Soils has updated and released Version 8.0 of The Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States. It’s the first printed update since Version 7.0 was released in 2010. The verbiage of every indicator and/or the user comments associated with every indicator has changed, some more than others. However, the changes are done for clarification and consistency purposes, and do not fundamentally change the interpretation or use of the indicators. So if you’ve been using Version 7.0 with the published errata, not much is really changing for you. One noticeable change you’ll see in many of the indicators is the replacement of verbiage similar to “starting within 15 cm of the soil surface” with “starting at a depth ≤15 cm from the soil surface”. Again, this does not change the meaning of the indicator, it was done to aid in comprehension based on user feedback.
As always, we’ve updated our website and our FREE Hydric Soil Indicators mobile app to reflect these changes. If you haven’t downloaded our app yet, it’s available for iOS and Android. You can click on the button below or you can go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search “hydric soil”.
